MN Senator Disputes Pioneer Press Claim That She Is “Homeless”

September 18, 2010 by Michael McIntee Economy/Jobs, MN Senate, Media Criticism No Comments

Senator Moua’s Parents Lose Home To Foreclosure

Despite what a Pioneer Press headline said, Senator Mee Moua says she and her family are not “homeless”. However, the home she and her parents were living in was foreclosed on, forcing them to move out.

The move happened just about the same time as the Minnesota legislative session was drawing to a close, which now explains Senator Moau’s surprise announcement in June that she would not be running for re-electon. As Minnesota’s first Hmong State Senator in a heavily DFL district, she was practically guaranteed at winning another term.

In today’s story from the Pioneer Press “Moua finds message in foreclosure woes“ Pioneer Press Reporter Dave Orrick touts his “exclusive” on breaking the Moua story, and notes that she was not “homeless” as their headline on their printed edition said, but makes no apology for making the mistake, and there is no correction printed in today’s edition of the Pioneer Press. The headline of the original Pioneer Press online version no longer has the word “homeless” in it.

Update: Reporter Dave Orrick says he did personally apologize to Senator Moua on Friday, and he did include the word “erroneous” in the story he submitted to his editors. But that word was removed from the story that was published on Saturday.

St. Paul mayor taps aide for city attorney post
Grewing handled policy as assistant Hennepin County prosecutor

    Updated: 09/02/2010 11:52:25 PM CDT

Mayor Chris Coleman has selected a trusted political adviser with prosecutorial experience to be St. Paul's next city attorney, he said Thursday.
Sara Grewing, 33, who currently serves as Coleman's chief of staff, likely will face an easy confirmation by the city council en route to taking the helm of the $8 million-a-year department Sept. 20.
Grewing will displace interim City Attorney Gerald Hendrickson, who has held the post since City Attorney John Choi resigned in April to focus on his political campaign for Ramsey County attorney.
Coleman said picking Grewing made him "proud."
"During her time in my office, she has proven herself to be an outstanding manager and advisor — traits that will serve our city well as she sets out on this new challenge," Coleman said in a statement. "Sara's experience and judgment made her the clear choice to lead one of the most critical departments in the city."
An honors graduate from William Mitchell College of Law, where she was executive editor of the law review, Grewing's résumé includes working as an assistant Hennepin County attorney from 2001 to 2004 under then-County Attorney Amy Klobuchar, now a U.S. senator. In that job, Grewing's duties included policy analysis for the office, where she focused on white-collar crimes. She said her courtroom experience was mostly limited to weekly arraignment hearings.
Grewing said that filling Choi's shoes will be difficult and that she doesn't expect to make any

I come from a prosecution office, and I have the deepest respect for what city attorneys do," Grewing said. "For the first six months, this is about keeping the train running." She said she expects one focus for the office to be domestic violence, which she described as an issue to which she has a "deep commitment."
Coleman plucked Grewing for the city attorney post without any formal application process or field of declared candidates. In picking Grewing, Coleman has retained a professional and political advocate.
Grewing's value to Coleman is more than just her legal acumen. She was Klobuchar's political director in her successful 2006 Senate campaign, and she went on to become the senator's state director.
"Sara is incredibly smart," Klobuchar said. "She worked with me in a number of ways, and I've seen her manage people, which is one of the hidden requirements of that job. A lot of people think of it as only prosecuting, but the management component is extremely important, and I've seen Sara do it. I have no doubt she'll succeed."
She also has experience in lobbying on behalf of the League of Minnesota Cities.
Since Coleman hired her in 2007, she's become a member of his inner circle of political advisers, a handful of staffers who were at the core of his campaign for governor, which Coleman abandoned a year ago before it officially started. And Coleman likely would ask her to come on board should he decide to seek the position again.
City Council President Kathy Lantry said she's worked well with Grewing as a go-between to the mayor's office, and the bottom line is her qualifications. "Clearly, she's very bright, she's an attorney and she's got experience," Lantry said.
Grewing currently earns $106,600. As city attorney, she'll earn $125,000 a year, Human Resources Director Angie Nalezny said. Choi was earning more than $135,000 when he left.
